America is not the only place where the fart is funny. Japanese people also find passing gas to be humorous, as do European nations. Basically, countries with cultures similar to ours tend to find farting funny. However, countries that are drastically different, such as many African nations, probably do not find passing gas funny. I think it has become a funny thing because of the funny sound. The movies have taken that funny sound and made the act of farting funny and that sense stuck in our culture.
