The elevation of the field of risk management is not only a prestige-oriented thing, it is also a matter of redefining risk management in the broader public eye. We need to make people behave more professionally and know more, and be more sophisticated in their approach to management. We also need to instill an appreciation in the broader business community about good risk management and what it can do. If all we do is give hope that they are going to be able to aspire to great careers and prestige–but we have not, at the same time, addressed the broader public awareness of the nature and value of risk management–then there may be great risk managers but they will not be appreciated, will not be valued and will not be rewarded for the great work they are doing.
