Avocados? Answer: Pahrump is a little colder generally than Las Vegas. Both the Gala and Fuji should do very well in Pahrump, but not the avocado. It is too cold. The avocado probably originated in southern Mexico, but has been grown by natives from the Rio Grande to central Peru. Avocados do best in the milder climates of California, Florida and Hawaii. Avocados are not adapted to the desert interior due to cold, winds, high light intensities, late frosts and humidity problems. Whitewashing the trunk or branches will prevent sunburn, one of several problems if you are to try it here. If you are bound and determined to try one, try a Mexican type and plant it in a container. Mexican types are the best choice for colder regions. Mexican types are native to the colder, dry subtropical plateaus and thrive in a dry Mediterranean climate.
