Is our modern education system a meritocratic one?
Meritocracy is a system of government or other organization based on demonstrated ability and talent rather than by wealth, family connections, class privilege. I do not believe that the education system of the United States is based upon Merit. Yes in schools children are graded upon their individual abilities, however the system itself is very jaded. Schools are not equal, affluent areas have wonderful schools with resources and curriculum designed for success. In poorer areas children (whose abilities I should add are equal to those of their affluent peers) have no textbooks, no paper and a teacher who stays up late each night designing a curriculum to help them learn. This is not to me a system based on merit, I feel it is very much a system of the “haves” and the “have nots”. If you gave anyone of my students equal access to the educations many rich/ middle class students take for granted, they would shine brighter then any other.
