Is Oprah in support of puppy mills?
The show received a lot of attention, and was re-run today, May 29th. From the Baltimore Sun “Mutts” blog: In Baltimore, it can be seen on WBAL, Channel 11, at 4 p.m. According to Oprah’s website, the idea for the show came from a billboard that had been put up to grab her attention, off the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago: “Oprah: Do a show on puppy mills. The dogs need you.” Not long after that, Oprah’s beloved cocker spaniel Sophie died. The puppy mills episode, which documents the deplorable conditions inside profit-obsessed, overcrowded breeding operations, was intended as a tribute to her dog, Oprah says. The man behind the billboard was Bill Smith, founder of Main Line Animal Rescue, an agency that rescues hundreds of abused, unwanted or abandoned animals, rehabilitates them and adopts them out to families.
