Is OpenOffice a good alternative to MSoffice?

OpenOffice is very reliable and safe if you get it from the official web site. It can do almost everything that MS Office can do right off the back. Some features require separate downloads (like presentation templates and the grammar checker). It’s only incompatible for very advanced features like Visual Basic macros. It’s better than MS Office at reading documents saved in old versions of MS Office.

If you have a problem with sending a file using OpenOffice, and are not sure if the recipient can view the file, you can always export the file to pdf, which will also ensure nobody can steal your ideas.
