The research firm SRI international recently conducted a survey for the US Department of Education, comparing test results for students at on-campus versus online institutions between 1996 and 2008. This group found that online students performed slightly better than on-campus students. This is an ongoing issue in education, and more research needs to be done, but the initial validation research for online education is positive.
