This week the United Nations closed its mission in Kandahar, Afghanistan, and withdrew most of its staff from the southern city. The U.S. military is expected to begin a major offensive in the country in coming weeks. It is part of President Barack Obama’s strategy to turn the tide on the Taliban insurgency before the U.S. begins drawing down its troops next year.
