Poor logic on both of you guys’ parts. 1.) Small cars are still going to be going in the 60 MPH range. Whether they hit a hummer, a tree, a brick wall, or another car will make precisely 0 difference. With the lighter (read: weaker) construction, they will simply disintegrate. In order to make them light enough to get that kind of mileage, the safety cages of the car will be significantly weakened. This has already been seen with the Cafe standards that have given us the vehicles we have today. You are many times more likely to die in a car made in 2000 than you are in a car made in the 1980’s. It has nothing to do with what other cars are on the road. That’s failed logic. 2.) Other European countries that have been “using smaller cars for years” do not have anything even remotely resembling the commutes that the common U.S. person has.
