Is nylon flame resistant?
The term flame resistant implies a tendency to be self-extinguishing once a flame source is removed. Some unreinforced nylons exhibit this characteristic during testing according to UL 94. After a flame has been applied and then removed from a standard molded bar specimen, the flame will extinguish. The mechanism for extinguishing is the dripping of the nylon which pulls the flame away from the bar. This mechanism does not occur with filled or impact modified nylons. Additives can make many grades reach UL 94 V-0 without use of PBDEs or halogens (in nylon products only).
