Is New Orleans-born actor Carl Weathers, of Rocky fame, running for mayor?
As once-undefeated heavyweight boxing champion Apollo Creed in the epic “Rocky” films, New Orleans-born actor Carl Weathers has shown cinema buffs everywhere what can happen when you go spoiling for a fight. Decades after he went down swinging to Rocky Balboa, it seems Weathers now is gunning for a new target, this one in the political arena. A Web site launched this month touts Weathers, 61, as the latest Hollywood celeb to toss his hat into the ring to become New Orleans’ next mayor. Last week, actor and French Quarter denizen Brad Pitt set to rest rumors that he would make a run at City Hall’s top job. Weathers’ site comes complete with a catchy slogan — “Helping New Orleans weather the storms ahead” — and includes pages on how to spread the word and donate to the campaign. Perhaps the most thorough section deals with issues including the city’s “troubling economic climate,” “rampant violence” and “inadequate hurricane protection.” It also takes a pointed dig at Mayor Ray Nagin.
