. Charlie Pillsbury and Garry Trudeau, author of the Doonesbury comic strip, were roommates at Yale University from 1968-1970. Charlie’s friends nicknamed him “Doone” and soon thereafter, Garry named his character Mike Doonesbury after Charlie. The resemblance ends there. Mike comes from Oklahoma; Charlie from Minnesota. Mike is a former Democrat, turned Republican; Charlie is a former Democrat, turned Green.
