Is mid-cycle bleeding common?
Mid-cycle spotting is not uncommon around the time of ovulation, but is usually only a very small amount and may be associated with the typical cramping or ‘Mittleschmertz’. It is due to the rapidly changing hormone levels at this time, when the lining of the uterus is very thickened and ready for implantation. A cervical erosion is when there is a red and inflamed area on the cervix. As well as spotting between the periods it can also happen after sex, and there is no particular relation to the middle of the cycle. Other symptoms include an increased vaginal discharge. Erosions are more common during pregnancy and when women take the combined contraceptive pill, due to high levels of the hormone oestrogen. If you have any persistent bleeding during the cycle or you are concerned, it is important to get it checked out by your GP, to rule out more serious conditions.
