In spite of what you may be hearing to the contrary, most of the country is very safe. I have traveled extensively across this diverse and interesting country and overall consider it safe provided you do not leave your common sense at home and take normal precautions.

In spite of what you may be hearing to the contrary, the truth is that most of the country is very safe. In fact Shelly and I spent the month of January 2011 on a 3000 mile (5000 Km) road trip through the 10 most southern Mexican states. We were driving a big, fancy, new car and travelled on and off the beaten path. At NO time did we ever feel the least bit concerned about our safety. What we encountered is what we always find. That is friendly people, fabulous things to see and great food. Yes the government is getting tough on the drug cartels and that has resulted in a great deal of bloodshed and spectacular media reports. However, this is concentrated near the US border which is 2000 – 2500 miles (3200 – 4000 Km.) from Cancun, so you are probably closer to the problem right now at home then you would be sitting on a beach in the Riviera Maya.
