For nearly 70 years, the primary power holders in Mexico has been the Partido Revolucionario Institucional , or the Institutional Revolutionary Party (the PRI), which was Mexico’s Socialist party. However, Mexican politics slowly absorbed the free-market ideals of the United States, and by the 1990s the PRI was more center-right than Socialist. The PRI’s long reign finally came to an end in the 2000 Mexican election, when Vincente Fox, member of the Partido Acción Nacional, or the National Action Party (PAN), won the election. The PAN’s political party is most closely similar to the American Republican party, as it stresses social conservatism and economic free-market initiatives. In 2006, the PAN won another, although hotly contested, electoral victory when it elected Felipe Calderon who, like Fox before him, stresses free-markets, open trade, and social conservatism.
