On One Hand: Metacam is Used for Post-Operative PainMetacam is the veterinary brand name for Meloxicam, a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which is indicated for use in reducing fever, inflammation and pain, specifically for dental procedures, spaying and neutering of cats and dogs. With respect to its use for cats, FDA approval extends only to one-time use by way of injection, although vets often prescribe a few daily doses of the drug orally for added pain relief after surgery.On the Other: Repeated Doses Have Proven to be FatalAccording to the FDA’s Adverse Drug Experience (ADE) reports, among 320 cats, the drug was responsible for 105 cases of kidney failure, 48 deaths and 35 cases which required euthanasia. In the majority of cases of oral use, the drug is administered to cats for arthritis.
