Is Medical Transcription a good career, with a bright future?
In a recent question you asked about the difference between a Medical Transcriptionist and Medical Records, I explained what the Medical Transcriptionist does. Basically, I gave an example of a Radiologist, i.e., a Radiologist could look at an X-Ray and dictate his findings into a voice recorder. Later, the Medical Transcriptionist would listen to this voice recording and type what she hears in the computer to create the official printed patient report. This concept , i.e., where a Physician dictates findings and a Medical Transcriptionist types them can not only be applied to Radiologists, but to Pathologists who do autopsies, Pathologists who look at tissue under a microscope, and other applications. In that sense, the good news is that Medical Transcriptionists can work in many healthcare areas. Yes, you have to be a good typist, but you also have to be extremely comfortable with the terminology. Now for the bad news. Voice technology, i.e., where the clinician dictates into a micro
