Predators are the chief agents of population control, not famine or disease, which are the result of hitting carrying capacity, often due to lack of predators. When it comes to humans, we tend to stop popping out kids when we have a higher standard of living. In Europe and the U.S., the trend for most couples is to have a single child, which actually results in a very low growth rate, and eventually possibly a declining growth rate.
