Is marriage governed by any Church law?
There are three types of law involved in a Catholic marriage. • Divine law (God’s law as written in the Bible) • Canon law – the law of the Church • Local laws of the country or state There are 110 Canon laws on the marriage issue (#1055-1165). Canon law usually yields to civil laws in temporal matters (Canon #1059), but nothing can trump the divine law. That’s another reason why same sex marriage is a non-starter, it contravenes not only Church law but also God’s law, as laid out in Scripture (Gen 1:27).
