I’m currently learning Japanese and have an interest in trying to learn Mandarin at some stage (5 years from now). I decided to go with Japanese because it’s supposed to be much easier than Mandarin. It is considered a category III language, meaning it takes well over a year of intensive study to master it. You may want to look at this survey which considers Mandarin the most difficult language to learn: http://www.language-learning-advisor.com/hardest-language-to-learn-survey.html By the way, I didn’t consider Russian to be especially difficult even though it rates high on the list. I hope this helps!! Sources: http://www.nvtc.gov/lotw/months/november/learningExpectations.
