The Lord of the Rings is not really any number of novels, it’s more of an epic in three volumes. The correct order is “The Fellowship of the Ring”, then “The Two Towers”, then “The Return of the King”. It is, itself, a sequel to the novel “The Hobbit”.

Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings wanted it be only one novel. But due to the paper shortages of World War 2, it had to be divided into three parts: The Fellowship of the Ring The Two Towers The Return of the King.
