Is lithium used routinely to enhance the effect of the radioactive iodine treatment?
There is some experimental clinical evidence to suggest that lithium may enhance retention of radioactive iodine in thyroid tissue following administration for the treatment of thyroid cancer. While still experimental, this type of combination therapy may be useful in selected patients. See Lithium as a potential adjuvant to 131I therapy of metastatic, well differentiated thyroid carcinoma. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1999 Mar;84(3):912-6.
