Is listening to music while working more focusing or distracting?
I think it really depends on the individual and how easily they are distracted by anything, including music. I know some people that have an extremely difficult time focusing, so music whilst working is out of the question. Classical music is an excellent choice as so many other answers have stated. For somebody who is easily able to focus, it is likely that listening to music will not distract them too much or at all. I had a teacher in high school who was a big Enya fan. She played Enya everytime we had an exam. Personally, I thoroughly dislike Enya’s music. I am in the easily able to focus and block out distractions category. Enya was too much for me to take and because I disliked it so much, that distracted me because it was annoying. Luckily, I wasn’t alone in being annoyed and she eventually let the class vote on “exam music”. Best rule of thumb is to experiment with different kinds of music to see what works for you. There have been studies looking at the influences of music on us while we work, and it depends on the type of music, the tempo and the volume. Lots of educators say Baroque music is great in classes, I’ve even heard reggae music helps the memory…. but where I’m concerned if the job I’m doing is really boring a good song can make it seem to go faster.
In my opinion I think that while working its good to have a light music in the background. Music tend to help people to focus or concentrate more on the work they are doing. In some industries they even proposed to put some music, because In a way they see that music help the worker to relax, thus when people work in a busy or stressful industry its good to have something that can help them to relax and this would be to their own benefits. Since it would help them to focus more on the work they have to do and therefore to be more productive.
