Is linking report card grades to Sunshine State Standards a new rule?
No. In previous years, as well, the Board-approved Pupil Progression Plan has required us to tie grades to performance at grade level. In past years, a student operating below grade level could not receive higher than a C. This year, a student operating below grade level cannot receive higher than a D. The State requires that parents be given accurate, honest information on the report card about whether their children are performing at grade level. Other than the higher academic standard implied by the change from C to D, the difference in some cases may be that now teachers are truly basing grades on Sunshine State Standards, not on other factors like attendance or good behavior which, by law, cannot be the basis for grades. 6.
