Br Med J 2008; 336: 429–431Dentistry in not job that involves regular heavy lifting but we may on occasion help to move a patient, and those in the salaried services are frequently required to take part in lifting and handling training. This systematic review, based on a Cochrane review,3 looked at intervention studies (randomised controlled trails and cohort studies) assessing the impact of training in working techniques with or without lifting equipment for preventing back pain or consequent disability. The authors found no evidence that this type of training was effective. This could mean that the recommended techniques did not reduce the risk of back injury or that training did not lead to adequate changes in lifting and handling techniques.
