Is Left Handedness a Sign of Learning Problems?
Is Left Handedness a Sign of Learning Problems? Saturday June 23, 2007 It may come as a surprise to know this, but there is a rumor floating around out there that says left handed kids have something wrong with them. Scary but true. In fact, one of my graduate school professors actually said aloud in class that left handedness is a form of mental retardation. (Incidentally, I was the only left hander in the class.) Aside from his politically incorrect use of the “R-word,” I couldn’t believe that after all these years, there were still people in teaching positions who taught such outdated and baseless things. I wanted to crawl under a rock. Still misinformation persists like mental spam, replicating and mutating, clogging our collective minds and ….well, you get the picture. So, in the interest of left handed children everywhere, and maybe even your own, take a minute to put the offending myth to rest. Is left handedness a sign of learning problems?
