Is L.M. Montgomerys Anne of Green Gables considered good literature?
It’s a classic, and it’s been one of my favorite books since my elementary school days. (Seriously, a “bad” L.M. Montgomery book is still better than 90% of what else is out there.) What gets me is that, while “Anne of Green Gables” was clearly meant for a children’s/young adult audience, Maud wrote many books that adults would like (Just off the top of my head, I’m thinking “Anne’s House of Dreams,” the “Emily” series and “The Blue Castle”.) But you never see her work in the adult section of a library or bookstore. Because of “Anne”, she’s labeled a “children’s author” and her novels and short stories are not usually taken seriously when people start lining up “the great literature of the 20th Century”. By the way, I love the 1985 CBC/PBS miniseries too and rank it up there with the 1995 BBC/A&E version of “Pride and Prejudice” as one of the most faithful book-to-film adaptations ever.
