Is kindergarten mandated in New York State?
I’m a parent of 2 kids, ages 5 and 8. My 8 yr old has been attending a Waldorf school and as demonstrated an artistic gift, advanced mechanical aptitude, and generally great skills. My 5 yr old, whom I think of as at least as gifted has started a public kindergarten as I didn’t quite have the money to send them both to Waldorf this year. She’s been pegged as requiring ‘intervention’ as she’s not on a certain reading level. I’m furious and I feel like marching down to the school and pulling her out tomorrow. Before I start acting rashly, would someone be able to tell me if kindergarten is mandatory in NY? I need to know what realities I’m dealing with. I was a late reader but have an IQ of 150+. My daughter and son appear to be rather gifted and I want what’s best for them, despite what I may be able to afford. If $ were not an issue, I would home school them both.
