Hi there Kendo teaches the art of fencing with the japanese sword. Granted it is a modern take but it is based on some very old fundamental principles. No Japanese sword art is complete just like no martial art is complete. In order to fully master the sword you need to cover quite a few things, Iaido for drawing, ettiquet, cutting etc. Kendo for fencing. Kenjutsu for traditional combat forms that include such things as shiken gata, muto dori etc. So if you were to split down whats required kendo is probably a tenth of what there is to study! History is the real reason for the split and mess of many Japanese arts ! So yes it is part of the samurai sword technquies its just a very small percentage. But it’s still worth giving a go! 😉 The reason why its a sport is purely down to the fact that its a game of tag with a shinai!
