Is keeping chickens an expensive hobby? How much would it cost to get started?

The thing with chickens it will be as expensive as you let it be. You will need a hen house of some sort, a lot for them to run in and chickens. The hen house and lot can be relatively small 10′ x 10′. You can spend about as much as you want on the chickens. If you can attend your county or state fair you can probably buy chickens there. If you order them from a hatchery they have a minimum number of chicks. Different hatcheries have different rules on the number that they will ship. I think that with a little help you could build a small hen house for maybe $50-$100 a lot would cost another $30 and the cheapest chickens for about $8 each. That would be two or three year hens. The first year is the best. If you decide to get into the chickens It is best to buy pullets. You can buy chickens straight run but you don’t want a bunch of roosters. Some breeds they only sell straight run chicks. I presently have an order in with Cackle Hatchery. I bought four different colors of Polish chicke
