Is John Lewis out of his freaking mind or what?
While John Lewis is certainly engaging in hyperbole, the point he brings up is not to be ignored. John McCain is permitting his supporters to say things about Obama that go beyond simple political rivalry, and to the point of outright threats upon his person. While any hope of a clean campaign was over long ago, John McCain could only have done himself a favor early on by chastising those who went too far. He would have appeared the gentleman for doing this, rightfully so. However, he permitted it, and his VP candidate certainly encouraged it indirectly, if not worse. McCain’s supporters certainly have right to free speech, although I would find it quite the stretch to see how this right would include calling for the death of a Presidential candidate. As for the non-violent but vicious personal attacks, they are free to say so, but in allowing this, McCain alienates himself from those who have a distaste for such tactics.
