We are a religion. There is no racial component to being Jewish. It is true that one is Jewish if born to a Jewish mother, but that doesn’t make it racial, any more than Catholic babies being baptised makes their inheritance racial. If a Jewish mother is Chinese, Indian, Arab, Aboriginal, Native American, etc etc, then her baby is Jewish as well as whatever race s/he may be (that’s always assuming you give any credence to the idea of race anyway, as it’s fairly discredited among experts in the field). One can be Jewish by conversion or by birth. No way can one become a member of a race by conversion. Ergo, it is a religion. There is no race, so I don’t know what it is you’re wanting to know when you ask what to call the race. Ashkenazi Jews were from central and eastern Europe (Germany, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Austria, Czech Republic etc).
