Is Japanese candy, cakes, and other sweets as sweet as American sweets?
Japanese candies tend to be less sweet. Japanese cakes are more european-style, and are less sweet than their American counterparts. However, wagashi, which are traditional sweets that are served with (very bitter) matcha, are VERY sweet. They are meant to be eaten before drinking the tea, so that the bitter flavor is not as overwhelming.
