Is Jackie Stewart right to criticise Hamilton for not joining the GPDA?
Max Moseley was right last year when he said Stewart was becoming a joke. I agree that racing was more dangerous in his time and car safety needed attention but now it’s gone too far in destroying circuits. I’ve been going to Silverstone since 1973 and remember when Wodecote was a proper corner and when you could see the cars at Copse without the aid of binoculars. Interestingly the opinion of Stirling Moss is totally opposite to Stewart. Good for Lewis Hamilton for not being another sheep. I recall the great Jacky Ickx wouldn’t join way back in the 70’s and Stewart had a go at him also.
I agree with music fan. SIR Jackie Stewart is right on the money with this one. I think Lewis, like a lot of drivers, has become a bit complacent with the fact that there hasn’t been a driver fatality in F1 since 1994-the horrible weekend in Imola when Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna both lost their lives-and now think there’s nothing to worry about. These are still vehicles going at high speeds with drivers who are taught to block and impede each other and without proper safety in place, there would be more fatalities. YOU and every other racing fan in the world owes a tremendous debt to Sir Jackie for his committment to safety. As to “ruining it for the fans” I would rather see a safe race than to see drivers die at the rate they did prior to the Formula One Drivers Association. Since 1953, 43 drivers have lost their lives in an F1 environment, including testing and races proper. You may want to see someone die, but I most certainly do not want to add to this horrible, tragic li
