I think the first two questions are very closely related so it depends on which animal we are talking about keeping as a pet. Dogs have been domesticated over a long period of time and many of them could never survive on their own so it would probably not be fair to turn them all loose at this point. You can often tell if a dog is happy or not. If one has a happy healthy dog, I see no problem with having that pet. If the goal is to provide a good healthy environment and to share a close relationship that is beneficial to both then this is probably a good thing. There are millions of dogs in this country and like it or not, they need to be taken care of. They are not going to just disappear. If our desire to own a pet causes the capture and incarceration of an animal that would otherwise be free to live the life that was intended by nature, then I feel that is a selfish abuse of nature.
