Although many categories of advanced practice nurses may have been educated to provide these and many other patient care services, other laws and regulations [such as federal laws, other state laws (e.g., Texas Health and Safety Code), or JCAHO requirements] significantly impact an advanced practice nurse’s ability to provide a specific service. Although the BON may state that the performance of a particular procedure or provision of a specific patient care activity is within an advanced practice nurse’s professional scope of practice, the advanced practice nurse may not perform the procedure or provide the particular service if other laws and regulations prohibit this.
