Is it true that there were certain people who were able to get rich off the great depression?
A friend of mine..long dead operated oil drilling rigs in Illinois in the 20s and 30s and 40s. He kept a lot of cash to pay his help. In those days our banking system was primitive and these roughnecks and gandy dancers were often drifters. When the depression hit, folks knew he kept cash so they came to him from time to time to sell land, houses, stocks, securities often at three to ten cents on the dollar. He bought and bought. When he died in 1974 he was a multi millionaire because he bought so low. Of course those assets returned to their normal values after the depression and that made him well off.
