Is it true that there are no wild snakes in Ireland?
Yes, it’s true. Legend has it that Saint Patrick drove them all out. If a pet snake escaped or was deliberately released, its survival would depend on its species. Many of the species commonly kept as pets are native to places with hot climates, which is why they must be kept in heated vivariums. A python or boa, for example, would die in the cold conditions Ireland experiences during winter – they are not adapted to deal with cold like this. However, any of the species found in mainland Britain – the adder, grass snake and smooth snake – could doubtless survive perfectly well in Ireland if released. These species are adapted to dealing with cold winters by hibernating.
