Is it true that The Walt Disney Company owns the city of Lake Buena Vista, FL.?
Walt Disney World is the largest property owner in the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which includes Lake Buena Vista; and so the Disney company has great control over the government. Reedy Creek Improvement District is a special governmental entity that was created by the Florida Legislature in 1967; it is separate from the local County governments and is exempt from most local ordinances and even some state laws. The governing boards for the District are elected by the property owners; one vote per 100 acres; and since Disney owns most of the property it does have a great deal of control over the local board and the District (including Lake Buena Vista).
