Is it true that the use of mobile phones can cause cancer?
The prevailing topics of current research programmes include projects which aim at resolving this issue. Because of the relatively high exposure of the head while using a mobile phone the possibility of an elevated risk for brain tumours is of special interest. So far scientists have not found any proof of a relation between normal use of mobile phones and tumours of the head. Some epidemiologic studies indicate, however, that a somehow elevated risk for certain b may exist. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection calls for further research in this field in order to clarify existing scientific uncertainties. Apart from that, the fields people are exposed to should be kept as low as possible for reasons of precaution. Due to the relatively high exposure of the head when using a mobile phone prudent handling of mobile phones is especially important (see “Recommendations of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection on mobile phone use” (in German)).
