Is it true that the road up the mountain to the ski area, Purgatory, is so snow covered that only a 4-wheel drive is allowed?

Although you may need snow tires or 4wd a lot of the time, the road rarely requires the use of chains between Durango and Purgatory unless you don’t have snow tires or 4wd. Trucks on the other hand will have to put chains on but this is usually North of the ski area.
