Is it true that the production of biofuels is causing global food shortages and an increase in food prices?
The rising demand for biofuels has led a number of agriculture producers worldwide to convert their production from food/feedstuff crops to those more suitable to biofuels. In some cases, increased demand for biofuels will increase demand for cereals and oilseeds, and therefore will have a modest impact on food prices. However, many factors affect food prices. In this context, the potential for plant biotechnology to support the production and commercialization of biofuels has also been recognised. Developments in the plant biotech industry could provide greater yields for biofuel crops, increasing supply without raising the concerns that are sometimes voiced when these crops are used for human consumption.
