Is it true that onions shouldn’t be stored near potatoes?
I’ve heard this as well, although from what I gather, it is OK to store them close to each other as long as they’re not actually touching. Both need to be in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can increase the concentration of solanine, a substance that gives potatoes a bitter taste and can be dangerous when eaten in large quantities. Most potatoes have very low levels and are absolutely safe. Solanine is mostly found in the skin and eyes of potatoes. I understand that apples should be stored away from carrots to avoid carrots tasting bitter and if you do not want your avocados to ripen, they should be kept away from bananas which release ethylene, a gas that speeds the ripening process. Ethylene is produced by most fruits to stimulate ripening, including apples. When an apple starts producing ethylene it goes off pretty quickly and so get it out of the fruit bowl quickly so one bad apple doesn’t ruin the lot. I’ve heard you can use prunes to reduce the amount of fa
