Is it true that nurses have a regular shift of 12 hours a day?

Yes, most nurses do work a 12 hour shift. However, they don’t all work 5 days a week. At my job I help to staff 7 different hospitals with nurses. The standard is 3-4 12 hour shifts a week. However, some nurses do work partial shifts due to availability or the specialty they focus in. Additionally, because of the nationwide nursing shortage many nurses frequently go in to overtime each week. I do have a number of nurses who work 7, 12 hour shifts or more in a row. Health care is exhausting 🙂 This is of course only the staffing for a hospital setting. Nurses work in a variety of other settings including schools and clinics. Staffing at a non-hospital location would probably be different then what I’ve described.
