Is it true that Nome, Alaska got its name through a “clerical error”?

It was labeled as “? Name” on an ol’ naval chart and the cartographer apparantly read it as “C Nome,” hence it forever became Nome on the maps and history book. Folks living there weren’t real thrilled by the new name, I might note, and tried to change it to Anvil City, but that effort never took, hence it’s Nome, as in “there’s no place like Nome”. Well, darn, I was going to include some pix I took there but the photo thingy isn’t cooperating. I’ll have to add a few to my photo site. In any case, Nome is an interesting spot. It’s about as close as I’ve ever come to stepping thru some time warp and feeling like I might be back in the “good ol’ days”. Yes, it has modern facilities, taxis, cars, all that fun stuff, but there’s an air of “old” to the place that dominates. You land at an airport whose terminal could almost fit into your house and the ride from there to my hotel was in an old, old van with one window replaced by plastic held in place by duct tape.
