All material things around us are made up of atoms including cells. It is the energy producing chemical reactions of some molecules (made by putting some kinds of atoms together in different ways eg all sugars contain carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, all amino acids contain nitrogen in addittion to these while two of them also contain sulphur) that enable cells to carry out the activities associated with life. Sugars and fats are burned to produce ATP which can then be used to provide energy wherever it is needed, eg to effect motion (body movement, digestion, heart beat) transmit nerve impulses, promote biochemical reactions, transport molecules and ions against concentration gradients.
