Is it true that linoleum can cause cancer over time?
Natural linoleum apparently contains linseed oil which is a anti-microbial. There is some concern that linseed oil emits aldehyde emissions over time, which have been linked with cancer. Because of this, linoleum is not recommended for applications in homes where children might have major exposure. Likewise, individuals with certain sensitivities to chemicals may also be adversely affected.
However, keep in mind that very few materials exist in the world that are completely safe and not linked with cancer in any way. Linoleum is still a much better option than PVC floorings which emit much more serious VOCs that are linked highly with cancer.
