Is it true that John Adams had an alligator as a pet?

Yes and no. John Adams (Adams2) did NOT have a “pet” alligator. His son, John Quincy Adams (Adams6) was given an alligator by Lafayette, which he kept in a bathtub in the East Room for about 2 months. I’m not sure what happened to the alligator after that.
