Is it true that I should only install Hofner, LaBella, or Pyramid bass strings on my German Hofner bass?

Yes, this is true. You should only restring German Hofner basses with strings from Hofner, LaBella or Pyramid. These strings are lower pressure than conventional strings, and are easier on the neck. Using conventional, high pressure bass strings on a Hofner bass can lead to your bass developing a substantial forward bow in the neck, possibly ruining your bass. The truss rod adjusting range on the German basses is designed to accomodate Hofner or Pyramid strings. These strings will easily fit on either a Hofner Contemporary or Icon bass. It is not mandatory that you use Hofner or Pyramid strings on the Contemporary or Icon basses, though. The truss rod on either bass can compensate the neck for virtually any short scale bass string.
