Update: Vernon Forrest was shot dead and killed at 2 am sunday morning in an attempted car jacking in Northwest Atlanta, a police spokesperson said. Police don’t think the suspects knew Forrest was a professional boxer. He was shot several times after chasing the suspects that tried to steal his Jaguar, police authorities said.

On the heels of the murder of former world champion and fan favorite Arturo Gatti comes news that Vernon “Viper” Forrest, a three time champion and a boxer noted for good works with mentally challenged youths, has been killed in an attempted carjacking in his hometown of Atlanta. Gatti was found murdered in a Brazilian hotel room and his wife remains in jail and under suspicion in the case but has not been formally charged by authorities. WSB Radio out of Atlanta is reporting that former world champion, Vernon Forrest was shot and killed in Atlanta, GA. According to WSB Radio, Forrest was a victim of an attempted car-jacking. WSB is reporting that Forrest was putting air into his tires at approximately 11PM Saturday night, when two subjects exited a red Monte Carlo, and tried to take Forrest’ car. Apparently the former world champion chased the two subjects with his own gun, and was shot and killed during the foot chase.
